Days of Learning

Caring for a Community Seed Collection

Sunday 17 November
10.30 - 16.30
Free

Join Walworth Garden and the London Freedom Seed Bank to learn about drying and storage of seed for community seed banks, and to help clean, sort and pack this year's London Freedom Seed Bank harvest.

The morning will be an introduction to different types of seed bank, and cover the basics of good practice in drying, cleaning and storage, record keeping and germination testing of seed, with guest speaker Fred Groom, from ecological seed company Vital Seeds.

The afternoon session will be more hands-on, as we clean, sort, pack and label the London Freedom Seed Bank 2019 harvest, in preparation for distribution through community events and outreach. You will gain experience of cleaning and sorting seed, including use of the London Freedom Seed Bank's seed cleaning machine.

This day of sharing and learning is suitable for those with some existing knowledge of seed saving or people who are interested in volunteering with, or starting their own, community seed bank.

(Please note: this workshop will NOT cover how to SOW seed, or basic principles of GROWING for seed-saving. These areas are covered by other workshops at Walworth Garden or by London Freedom Seed Bank).

Supported by a grant from the Community Seed Banks Academy.
