The Organisation

Walworth Garden’s mission is to ‘‘change lives by delivering excellent learning and horticultural therapy in an award winning garden that’s open to all’.

More specifically the Garden provides among other things:

  • A peaceful haven which is open 7 days a week

  • Accredited Horticultural training, QCF Level 2 in Work Based Horticulture at Award, Certificate and Diploma levels

  • Horticultural Therapy to vulnerable adults

  • A variety of funded courses available to all, but free to Southwark residents

Job  Role

The primary purpose of the Trainee Gardener post is to carry out physical gardening and landscape maintenance work as a member of the Garden Services team.

The Garden is a small organisation and employees are expected to be reasonably flexible so that we can meet the changing needs of our beneficiaries and customers. This might include litter picking, watering, pruning and operating the Garden’s machinery.

The post holder will report to the Operations Manager or in their absence, to the CEO.

Duties specific to this role will include the following:

  1. To carry out gardening and landscape maintenance work at various sites around London in accordance with the Garden’s contractual obligations.

  2. To ensure that the quality of service delivered to existing clients is maintained or exceeded in accordance with the contractual obligations and timeframe allowed.

  3. To drive the Garden’s vehicles and equipment to and from sites as required and if appropriate.

  4. To carry out regular maintenance checks on the Garden’s vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment and report anything untoward.

  5. To work as part of the Garden Services team and reliably and appropriately represent Walworth Garden  in the community at all times.

  6. To complete classroom and practical studies under the guidance of the Garden’s Horticultural tutor as required towards attainment of a QCF (City and Guilds) Award, Certificate or Diploma as appropriate.

  7. To ensure that wherever possible, vans are returned to Walworth Garden empty, having been to the recycling centre and ready for the next days work.

Joint responsibilities

You will share with other staff the responsibility for the following:

  • Compliance with Health and Safety regulations and the Garden Services work based risk assessments, in particular when working on external sites, ensuring that all reasonable steps are taken to ensure personal safety, the safety of other staff and the public at all times

  • The security and prevention of damage to the Garden, Garden buildings, vehicles, tools, equipment and stock owned or in use by the Garden.

  • Under direction, the maintenance of the Garden site, including keeping the buildings and vehicles clean and in good condition

  • Responding appropriately to enquiries about the Garden and its work from the public community, groups or other organisations

  • Compliance with Walworth Garden’s equal opportunities and all other policies and procedures

Person Specification

  • To be willing to commit to learning and developing practical skills for a career in Horticulture

  • To be reliable, enthusiastic, punctual and proactive

  • To behave and appear in a professional manner at all times, adhering to the Garden’s rules about uniform

  • To be personable

  • To be able to work alone and as part of a team

  • To have good communication skills, be well organised with have an attention to detail.

  • To have experience or a keen interest in gardening

  • To be flexible and  to work evenings and weekends as needed.

  • To be able able to listen and take on board instructions and guidance positively, consult with others and communicate proactively.

Desirable

  • A UK driving license and willingness to qualify to drive or operate the Garden’s vehicles, agricultural and related specialist equipment as required.
