Apprentice Gardener

Job summary

Apprentice gardeners will work with the Garden Services Division, learning how to maintain gardens
around Southwark. They will learn to use machinery such as petrol powered lawn mowers, hedge
trimmers, strimmers and blowers. In addition, they will use secateurs and shears.

Apprentices will on occasion work with the Head Gardener, learning how to design and construct
gardens for private individuals. This work includes both hard and soft landscaping.

Apprenticeship Training

Training will take place one day a week and will culminate in a QCF accredited Diploma in Work Based
Horticulture at Level 2. There will also be regular and on the job mentoring.

Training includes:

  • Monitoring and maintaining health and safety theory. Machinery use and maintenance theory

  • Plant nomenclature terminology and identification theory set weed identification/ work with
    weeds

  • Preparing ground for seeding or planting

  • Establishing plants and or seeds in soil, theory

  • Maintaining plants outdoors theory

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, theory

  • Remove unwanted plant growth to maintain development, theory

Person Specification

  • To have experience or a keen interest in gardening

  • To be willing to commit to learning and developing practical skills for a career in Horticulture

  • To be reliable, enthusiastic, punctual and proactive

  • To behave and appear in a professional manner at all times, adhering to the Garden’s rules about

    uniform

  • To be personable

  • To be able to work alone and as part of a team

  • To have good communication skills, be well organised with have an attention to detail

  • To be flexible and to work evenings and weekends as needed

  • To be able able to listen and take on board instructions and guidance positively, consult with others

    and communicate proactively

Eligibility criteria:

● Must be aged 16 – 25

● Southwark resident

● Not in education, training or employment (no more than a maximum of 16 hours a week)
