Join us on a journey to a more sustainable South London, supporting the green economy and a fairer future for all.

Walworth Garden is seeking enthusiastic, environmentally conscious, and locally represented consultant practices in Structural Engineering, Environmental & Services Engineering, and Cost Consultancy, to join us in developing and delivering our new Environmental Learning Centre. This ambitious project will become a beacon of sustainability and inclusive education for the city, and uphold the charity’s objectives around knowledge and nurture. The selected groups will work alongside the appointed architectural practice LudwigWillis Architects to grow this important community resource.

About Walworth Garden

Walworth Garden is a community green space in the heart of Walworth, in SE17. Founded in 1987 and transformed by the local community from a derelict plot of land into a thriving community garden, we equip locals with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to both improve their lives and protect our environment, and we are dedicated to reducing inequality in South London. Today this includes delivering accredited horticultural training at Level 2 for 100+ adult learners each year, as well as weekend workshops on gardening and wellbeing topics, along with regular community learning events, and volunteering sessions. It also includes accessible social and therapeutic horticulture, and back-to-work support programmes throughout the year, for those facing mental health issues, isolation, and loneliness. Walworth Garden is the only biodiverse space in the area open to the public 7 days a week.

About This Project

In continuing this history of community-led growth, we are now undertaking improvements to make Walworth Garden a safer and more accessible space, and develop our community’s vision of an environmentally-focused learning centre.

This space will provide additional training spaces to explore, test, and share environmental practices that confront the climate emergency and our carbon neutral targets. Allowing us to deliver enrichment programmes with schools and family learning opportunities, we aim to provide not just reassurance and evidence that changing our own behaviours will help improve the world we live in, but guidance, vision, and opportunity for the next generation to play a leading part in this change.

The chosen practices will be supporting future-proof facilities to help untangle the complexities and challenges that the next generations will have to address, and together with LudwigWillis Architects, will have the opportunity to build on the site’s fascinating history, both for the community and beyond, where our main building was built by the trailblazing Matrix Feminist Design Co-operative.
