Join our resident beekeeper Simon, who will be sharing presentations and demonstrations uncovering the misunderstood and hidden lives of bees - from the honeybee and beyond - and their colonies. You’ll get an insight to some of the practicalities of beekeeping, enter the apiary to meet the bees, and have the opportunity to ask plenty of questions.
We'll be covering: The bees found at Walworth Garden and our philoshopy and approach for caring for them
The lifecycles and differences between honey bees, bumble bees, and solitary bees.
Their roles in pollination, the food chain, and their co-evolution with plants.
Bee populations in decline, the 'save the bees' movement, and what we can do, including wildlife friendly gardening
An introduction to sustainable urban beekeeping, and a practical session in the Walworth Garden apiary.
Meet Simon Saville:
Simon is a lifelong bee and butterfly enthusiast and local resident. He is passionate about London’s wildlife and the green spaces that support them. Many people are surprised that London is over 47% green space, and also that it is rich in wildlife. Simon has spent the last few years exploring the green spaces of south London for wildlife, and the emerging message is that butterflies and moths are spreading their range. He is keen to encourage people to get out and explore the parks and green spaces around them, and for boroughs to do more to make our parks better for wildlife.
He is Chair of the Surrey & SW London Branch of Butterfly Conservation and a committee member of the London Beekeepers’ Association. He oversees the Walworth Garden Apiary. Follow him on Twitter @sbsaville.
