Honey Harvest 2022

Workshop: 2022 Honey Harvest

Join our resident beekeeper Simon for this rare opportunity for us city-dwellers to connect with a seasonal activity which has been practised by people all over the world for thousands of years.

Being sure that we leave sufficient honey for the bees to feed on over the winter, this practical, hands-on session will include:

  • Opening the hives to separate the bees from some of their honey

  • Making sure that the room for extraction is clean and bee-proof

  • Uncapping the wax honeycomb

  • Spinning out the honey using an electrical extractor

  • Jarring and labelling the honey for Walworth Garden

No previous experience or special equipment is necessary. We recommend you wear footwear and socks that cover feet and ankles, and clothes that can easily be washed (they may get honey on them!). We will provide aprons.

You’ll leave with your own jar of the freshly harvested honey to take home.

Meet Simon

Simon is our resident beekeeper, managing our apiary at Walworth Garden so that volunteers can participate in sustainable beekeeping. He is a local resident who encourages Londoners to explore and enjoy the green spaces near where they live, particularly through volunteering with Butterfly Conservation and London National Park City.
