Terrariums: Creating a Self-Sustaining World

Join our terrarium expert Danny for an exploration of cacti, succulent and tropical plants at Walworth Garden, and how to use them to grow your own self-sustaining world. You’ll discover the magnificence of plants’ evolutionary adaptations, applying your new knowledge in a practical session, and leave with your own terrarium.

We will be covering:

  • The fascination of terrariums: your own miniature world

  • How to divide and replant to create an attractive terrarium display

  • The basic science of terrariums, and how they can be a ‘closed’ system that can live for hundreds of years

  • The differences between ‘tropical’ and ‘dry’ terrariums: plants to select, plants to avoid, and how to care for them

  • A practical session creating terrariums using recycled jars, peat-free compost and other sustainable materials

Participants are encouraged to bring their own jar to use as their terrarium, preferably with a lid and preferably a minimum of 2L in volume. Some recycled jars will be available from Walworth Garden in limited sizes and shapes.

Meet Danny:

Danny has worked across a wide range of schools in East London, later changing careers to become a community gardener with the RHS. He is now Education Manager at Walworth Garden, where he will often be found totally absorbed in the minute detail of the flora & fauna it is home to. Danny has a deep and long-standing relationship with plants, and loves nothing more than bringing their fascination closer to other people. He is drawn to a 'Beyond Organic' growing philosophy which pays respect to the soil and animal life in the garden. Danny loves to cook a weekly vegan masterpiece for our staff lunch in the garden, and outside of work he also volunteers at a range of community growing projects in Hackney.
